OH-SMART has been applied to Infectious and Zoonotic Disease Planning. Through piloting of the tool, OH-SMART was successful in supporting collaborative working between the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture and representatives from the in-country offices of USAID, The United Nations, The World Health Organization, and the US CDC.

The OH-SMART tool offered insights into the response to the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Outbreak (HPAI). Using components of the tool, participants trained in OH-SMART techniques interviewed HPAI Incident Command System team members and mapped the outbreak response.

Feedback from training workshops was that the OH-SMART process will be very useful for Indonesia, helping provinces identify ways to strengthen their cross-agency collaboration around zoonotic disease.

Afghanistan: AHEAD Health Workforce Planning

Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ethiopia: Zoonotic Disease Workforce Planning
OH-SMART for workforce planning has been used in Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia to identify critical markets and competencies for challenges arising at the human-animal-environmental interface. OH-SMART implementers typically used a 3-step process to ensure that (1) existing workforce needs were summarised across sector-specific assessments, (2) the OH-SMART tool could be employed to map the multi-sectoral system and identify markets and training gaps, and (3) results could be integrated and presented back to ministerial/ stakeholder leadership for improved workforce planning.
